Mahan Gallery is pleased to present ‘This is a Comic Book’, an exhibition surveying new perspectives in comics and the varying implications of displaying them in a gallery setting. As the title of the exhibition ironically suggests, there is a multitude of possibilities within the medium, which are manifested in the show through the work of fourteen disparate and at times conflicting voices in contemporary comics.
Anders Nilsen, Closed Caption Comics, Cole Johnson, Dorothy Gambrell, John Porcellino, Lauren Weinstein, Lee Mei Yan, Matt Furie, Mickey Zacchilli, Mike Taylor, Nate Powell, Panayiotis Terzis, Phonzie Davis, Ron Rege Jr.
“This is a Comic Book” intends to inform the public while encouraging investigation from even the most knowledgeable comic book reader by removing the work from its usual method of interaction and directing a microscopic lens on the works as both illustration and creative writing.
The show will be accompanied by a small run catalog-zine featuring writing by Anne Elizabeth Moore, former editor of the Comics Journal, Dave Filipi, Curator of Film/Video at the Wexner Center, and J. Caleb Mozzocco, former Culture Editor for the Columbus Alive and creator of the comics blog "Every Day is like Wednesday".
