CUT-UPS

Nicholas Bohac, Ophelia Chong, Aaron Maurer, Alexis Mackenzie, Garrett Pruter

June 4 - 26, 2010
Opening reception, Sat, June 5, 6-10 pm

Nicholas Bohac dissects and then reassembles the elements of traditional landscapes, seeking to comment on the interplay and interdependence between man and the environment. Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Bohac is a graduate of Bellevue University and received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has shown his work across the country and currently resides in San Francisco, CA with his wife and their two cats.

Ophelia Chong takes found ephemera and builds a story around the image using one simple shape, a swoosh, which comes from an Exacto No.11 blade, a simple turn of the wrist, a bit of glue and building upon layer upon layer of color to create an interpretation of the original found image. Chong received her BFA in painting from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and currently works and resides in Los Angeles, California.

Aaron Maurer's collage work is dark and mysterious while at the same time reminiscent of the romantic neo-classical paintings of David, and science-fiction illustration of the 1960's. Maurer strives to create work which expresses various stages of decay, their perceived times in a constant state of flux, conveying the inevitable cycle of death and rebirth that governs all things. Maurer grew up in Minneapolis, MN and attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where he majored in film and animation. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Alexis Mackenzie portrays the world as a flawed thing of beauty- a place that shines brightly, but has a dark side to mach. She painstakingly hand cuts and pieces together images from books she has collected over the years as seamlessly as possible, creating meticulously gorgeous work that has a delicate, light and airy feel while at the same time hold a hauntingly stark reality. Mackenzie grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and received her BFA from Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 2003. She currently lives and works in San Francisco, CA.

Garret Pruter uses collage and drawing to piece together a not-so-distant world of fleeting memory, blurred consciousness, impossible space, and pixilated place. Born and raised in California, Pruter recently graduated from Parsons School of Design with a BFA in Illustration and currently lives and works in New York City.
